7 Recipes That Use Oatmeal ...

By Lyndsie

I love oatmeal. I love oatmeal, in part, because it is so versatile. You can do tons of different things with it. It warms your tummy, it improves your skin, and it makes a lot of your food taste better. It's hearty and healthy, and it pops up in some of the most surprising places! If you love oatmeal too, and love to cook, then the following recipes that use oatmeal might be right up your alley!

1 Bread

There are tons of different kinds of breads you can make using oatmeal. You typically still need flour and yeast, but the addition of oatmeal gives the bread a really hearty, filling aspect. The most common types of oatmeal bread I've seen are breads made specifically for toasting, and herbal breads that have very strong, savory flavors and are ideal for dipping into soups.

2 Peanut Butter Cookies

Now, there are lots of cookie recipes that use oatmeal, of course, but oatmeal cookies, when they are plain and all by themselves, can get a little boring. There are tons of things you can mix in with the oatmeal to make a delicious cookie, but I think peanut butter oatmeal cookies are at the top of the list. All you need is a stick of butter, one and a half cups of creamy peanut butter, a cup of brown sugar and half a cup of white, three eggs, two tablespoons of baking soda, one tablespoon of vanilla, and four and a half cups of oats. Literally all you have to do is mix and bake at 350F. They'll be done in about 8-10 minutes. If you want, you can also add in a cup of your favorite candy or dried fruit.

3 Pancakes

You need to throw out all those boxes of pancake mix, and instead try this recipe for Applesauce Oatmeal Pancakes. All you have to do is whisk up the ingredients and cook your cakes for 5 minutes a piece. And the ingredients are easy to assemble: half a cup of all-purpose flour (or a quarter cup of whole wheat flour); half a cup of oats; half a cup of fat-free milk; one teaspoon of baking powder; half a teaspoon of baking soda; a quarter teaspoon of salt; a quarter cup of sugar; half a cup of unsweetened applesauce; two egg whites, large; and a tablespoon of canola oil. Voila!

4 Venison Log

I know that probably sounds gross, but venison is actually delicious. There are tons of savory recipes that use oatmeal out there, and this one comes from Ted Nugent, of all people. His Stuffed Rolled Venison Log leads to ground up venison, filled up with mozzarella, ham, and oats, of course!

5 Meatloaf

There are literally dozens of meatloaf recipes that use oatmeal, and every one of them is delicious. I prefer this, actually, because unlike crackers or bread, oatmeal doesn't get soggy when it mixes with the tomato juice. Basically, all you need to do is take your own favorite meatloaf recipe, and use oats instead of bread crumbs, crackers, or what have you. Usually, it will just take half a cup of oats.

6 Crisps

Whether you're talking about apple crisp, rhubarb crisp, or any other kind of crisp, oatmeal is a necessary ingredient. Not only does it create this lovely, creamy, warm center in the dessert, but it gives the essential crunch on top. Oatmeal can get super crunchy – there's a reason it's frequently used in homemade granola.

7 Granola

Speaking of which! If you're into granola but no longer want to buy it, you can make use of the oatmeal you have laying around the house. It's actually incredibly easy to make your own granola, and whether you want to use fruits or candies, the possibilities are endless.

Now, there are probably tons more recipes that use oatmeal floating around out there. I bet there are recipes I never would have imagined that use oatmeal, as either a primary ingredient or a substitute for something else. Do you have any secret oatmeal recipes you'd like to share?
